Acrylic on canvas, 24” x 24” – 2017
“Oft times the mind sees naught
But an endless darkened hole
Sun and grass forever lost;
Only Hope can ease this soul.”

Askew Sketch
When in Provence last year we went to an amazing sound & light show at an abandoned limestone mine in the mountain under the ancient hill-town of Bonnieux. In this cavernous, almost pure white space, massively enlarged photographs and animations of famous artists work are projected on the walls, floors, and ceilings accompanied by magnificent music. We saw the work of Chagall. It was overwhelming, like nothing I had ever experienced before.
The adjoining photograph shows the massive entry. And since I am among those many who have experienced depression the image brought to mind the feeling of an endless dark pit from which there was no escape.
A strange juxtaposition of the amazing and the terrifying, I know.
